Introduction

  • All dogs must be registered at three months of age.
  • If the dog/s you are registering are currently registered in a different Council district (or were previously registered in a different Council district), please use this form.
  • If you don't register your dog you could be fined and your dog seized and impounded. There are fines for an unregistered dog and for an uncontrolled dog. You'll need to pay all fines and fees before we can release your dog.
  • You can register multiple dogs using this form, provided they all reside at the same address.
  • Persons wishing to keep 3 or more dogs on one property in the residential zones are required to make an application to the Council. Please complete this application form and attach it to the relevant section of this Application for Dog Registration form. To identify if your address is in one of the residential zones, please check on this map

Information Required

  • Address dog is kept at
  • Dog's name, birthdate, colour and gender
  • Dog's breed and classification
  • Whether dog has been neutered or spayed (de-sexed). A copy of a vet certificate or self certification is required
  • Microchip details
  • Owner date of birth. This is required to enable you to be distinguished from other persons with the same name. Certainty of identification is required in the enforcement of the provisions of the Dog Control Act 1996

Important Notes

Dog Control Act 1996

Section 42(1) of the Dog Control Act 1996 requires that: "...every person commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $3,000 who is the owner of a dog of a greater age than 3 months unless the dog is registered under this Act for the current registration year...."

Please note failure to register your dog(s) will result in an infringement notice ($300 per dog) being issued under Section 66 of the Dog Control Act 1996.

Microchips

Your dog will need a microchip if it is:

  • A new puppy
  • A dog registered after 1 July 2006 (working farm dogs are exempt)
  • A dog that has been declared menacing or dangerous

Please see your vet to arrange microchipping if required. Please scan or take a photo of one of the stickers that came with the microchip, and attach the image to the appropriate part of this form.

Disability Assist Dog

A dog that has been certified by an appropriate authorised organisation (no fee).

Statement for the purpose of Principle 3 of the Privacy Act

The information you provide is official information and is used to help process your application. The information is held and used in accordance with the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 and the Privacy Act 2020. This means that your information may be disclosed to other people who request it in accordance with the terms of these Acts. Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to see and correct any personal information that Council may hold about you.

1. The information is being collected to enable the Council to maintain its dog register and records.
2. The intended user of the information is the Council's Environmental Services Unit.
3. You have the right of access to and correction of any personal information held about you by the Council.
4. This information is held on the council's dog register.
5. Supply of information from the dog register is strictly limited by Section 35 of the Dog Control Act 1996, which can be viewed here.
